VIRTUAL REALITY TO REDUCING PAIN AND ANXIETY AFTER LAPAROSCOPIC SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY: A RANDOMIZED, CONTROLLED TRIAL
 
Background: Inadequate managing postoperative pain and anxiety is associated with a wide range of adverse consequences, including increased morbidity, development of chronic postoperative pain, impaired function, recovery from surgery, and quality of life, prolonged opioid use, and increased medical costs. Postoperative pain management is a complex treatment and a caring issue in obese patients. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of virtual reality on pain and anxiety for individuals after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Methods: This was a pretest-posttest design, single-center, randomized controlled experimental study. It was carried out on patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy between September 1, 2019, and December 31, 2019, in the surgical intensive care unit. The study was completed with 110 patients who met inclusion criteria and agreed to participate in the study. The sample size was calculated using power analysis by G*Power 3.1 software. Patient Information Forms, Numeric pain rating scale, and Face Anxiety Scale were used for data collection. Also, heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure measurements were carried on 10 minutes before, and 10 minutes after the procedure for all patients. The statistical significance level was taken as 0.05 in all analyses, and data were analyzed using SPSS 21 software. Ethical approval was provided from Adana City Training and Research Hospital Clinical Research Ethics Committee. All the participants informed regarding the confidentiality and privacy of the study and they could withdraw from the study whenever they wanted to. Informed consent was taken from participants before the study begins. Results: 81.8% of the patients in the intervention group and 78.2% of the patients in the control group were women. The mean age of the patients in the intervention group was 36.62±9.65 years and the control group was 37.35±12.35 years. The mean score of the Numeric Pain Scale was significantly lower in the intervention group’s post-test (p<0.001). The mean score of the Face Anxiety Scale was significantly lower in the intervention group than the control group after the intervention (p=0.008). Conclusion: The results showed that this intervention was effective in reducing pain and anxiety levels of patients who have bariatric surgery in the intensive care unit.
